To pass through the eye of a needle is a metaphor that has troubled me for sometime, trying to understand the meaning and reference used by Jesus Christ, until one day when I was reading a book entitled, “What the Scriptures Teach us about Prosperity” (by S. Micheal Wilcox). The author wrote the book to relate the scriptural teachings about wealth and prosperity. How the enticements of worldly wealth can cause us to fall from grace and loose faith. His book came to a place where he spoke of Jesus Christ using a metaphor of the camel passing through the eye of a needle to reference the burden of riches and condemning aspects of worldly wealth.

Previously I understood that the camel and needle reference speaks of a great difficulty in reference to wealth, but the actual understanding eluded me, despite all the scripture reading I had done. It was not until the camel-needle reference was matched to my own spiritual experiences that I arrived at an understanding of what Jesus meant. To pass through the eye of the needle refers to the trials and tribulations of spiritual life with Jesus Christ. Jesus told the rich prince to give away his wealth to charity and take up the cross and follow him, that was the trial. As the story goes, the rich prince could not do this and he walked away disappointed and that was the tribulation, the prince could not bring himself to accept and endure this sacriface.

Is Belief Alone So Bad?

From time to time, I hear fellow members of the Church express disappointment and discouragement about a lack of a testimony born from a spiritual experience. Another is the disappointment expressed in regards to the lack of personal revelations or the infrequency of them. For some time now, I wondered why other members had such a difficult time obtaining a testimony, or why they have such a lack of personal revelation while other members obtained a personal testimony by the Spirit and experienced many personal revelations.

We know that either a personal testimony or personal revelation are born of the Spirit and each full member has the gift of the Holy Ghost. We know that each member has the right to the counsel and guidance of the Holy Ghost, yet some members claim they do not receive such guidance while others have. So why is it that some members do not experience the Spirit of God?

I pondered this for some time and even prayed to the Father for answers until recently I felt impressed to write this particular article.

Fasting and Praying

All members of this Church know about fasting and that it is usually for every first Sunday of the month. Here, I wish to provide you an account of my experiences with fasting, to show the value of it for our faith rather than do an instructional article. Be aware that what I relate here is on the basis that no medication is required and health is reasonable to good.

Fasting is not just for the first of each month, it is for any time that a person wants to seek God’s help, gain enlightenment or just spiritually cleanse or purge the body, mind and soul. Fasting is always like getting your car a new oil change, it simply helps everything run better and cleaner. So it is with your body and spirit, because after all, your spirit does suffer from the sludge caused by mortality and the flesh as would your car engine suffer from it’s form of sludge caused by oil that has become dirty or well used.

Moroni Praying by the plates

Prayer does work and when done properly it works very well. The workings of prayer are rather simple, but despite this simplicity, so many fail to understand how prayer works and many find that prayer works only sometimes if at all. The scriptures tell us that we are to pray often and diligently. This is not an idle direction from God neither is it contingent on personal preference. A person who prays rightly and often will find that his/her state of mind and heart will abide in the first commandment. Their faith will receive support and direction.

All faith that is not focused into proper works is a dead faith, but rather than getting into the doctrinal support and reason for proper and frequent prayer, I wish to write here a personal aspect of proper prayer.

Prayer has worked well for me, despite experiences where it appeared at times that what help I had asked for seemed to never come.
